The  80th General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) opened in Hà Nội on Monday with the participation of 152 delegations from INTERPOl member countries.

This year’s INTERPOL General Assembly is focused on ‘Connecting Police for a Safer World – Strong Partnerships, Innovation and Capacity Building’.

Officials and experts will discuss a wide range of issues at the event including assessing the implementation of resolutions on combating crime, exchanging experiences in preventing transnational crime, and setting orientations for INTERPOL’s future in line with globalization and international integration.

The General Assembly will also ratify important resolutions on police cooperation and elect the organization’s Executive Committee.

The 80 th INTERPOL General Assembly will focus on six top priority fields to cope with the dynamic changes in the international environment and challenges to global security.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Nguyễn Xuân Phúc highlighted that Việt Nam has been unceasingly expanding multifaceted cooperation with other countries and territories, political and economic centers, and international organizations for peace, independence and development.

The country has signed a number of declarations or treaties on combating terrorism, trans-national crime, especially drugs smuggling, defraudation, money laundering, human trafficking, high-tech crime.

Since late 1990s, the Vietnamese Government has deployed the national strategy for crime prevention, focusing on combating organized crime, preventing drugs and human trafficking, and  investing and mobilizing the whole society to engage in addressing causes behind crimes like poverty reduction.

Deputy PM Phúc affirmed that the Government also attaches importance to cooperation with INTERPOL and strongly support the Organization’s activities.

Việt Nam has hosted this event for the first time since it became the 156th member of INTERPOL 20 years ago.
